Hooters Casino Sale Stalls

Hedwig’s Las Vegas Top Tier, of California, failed to make a $500,000 nonrefundable payment on Friday. Which lead Hooters to cancel the sale. Hedwig’s blamed the market for the problem.

In March, Hedwigs planned to spend $225 million to buy the property and spend $130 million on renovations and a name change. Hedwigs investment group has put up $6 million in nonrefundable fees and other costs toward the purchase, too bad for Hedwigs, really good for Hooters.

According to the Review-Journal, Hooters president and minority share owner Richard Hessling said he’ll either continue to operate, accept another sale offer, or look at expanding, but declined to discuss the Hedwigs deal further.

Hooters put $130 million into renovating the former Hotel San Remo before opening in February 2006.

When is The Monte Carlo Opening?

The Monte Carlo will re-open Friday February 15th 2008 in phases. Starting with 1,200 hotel rooms and another approximately 1,500 the week after. The top floors will remain closed for a while longer.
Lance Burton will also re-open on Friday the 15th.

We are glad to see the Monte Carlo open up so quickly after a fire. It could have been a lot worse but Las Vegas has a great fire department and the Monte Carlo had great fire suppression.

It also has to be noted that the Monte Carlo is just not opening up the whole hotel at once but doing a soft opening which will help everyone ease back in to feeling comfortable and validated.

Mirage Volcano to be updated

MGM/Mirage began the update to the Mirage Volcano. It was about time. It first erupted on November 22 1989 and was updated in 1996.

The company “Wet Design” the designers of the Bellagio fountains and others around the world are now undertaking the task of the Mirage Volcano. We love the previous designs of “Wet Design” and cannot wait until this is finished around November 2008.

When finished the Mirage Volcano will have new water effects, waterfalls and of course smoke and fake lava.
The Mirage Volcano is a must see attraction for the first-time Vegas Visitor, but the update will bring out the seasoned visitors for another look. I myself cannot wait to see what is in store.

Trouble in Jay Z’s 40/40 Club Las Vegas

Jay Z’s new 40/40 club opening has been less than smooth. The reports from the employees are that the owner is less than professional and wasn’t prepared for the December 30th opening.

From what we have read, over 100 or staff members have been either fired or have walked off the job and out of the 10 original managers only 2 remain. The managers were let go for questioning operational procedures. It was also reported that 55 of the 90 security staff were also let go. From our understanding the staffers that were fired were done so without valid reason or over petty issues. One report covered areas that the staff was never trained on the new cash register system and any breakages or spills had to be paid for out of their employees pocket.

I do not know what this says about the owner or operating partner Desiree Perez. I don’t know if it was a scare tactic to get the other employees to understand who is boss or the fact that they ramped up the staff for the big New Years bash. Only time will tell the true story, since everyone has their own version. I have read many posts on Forums, Blogs and other websites, for and against the Jay Z 40/40 club, but there is an overwhelming posts bashing the club.

If I were the club owner, I would keep quit, fix the employee issues and let this pass.

Monte Carlo Fire, Vegas is Burning

There was and is a fire at the Las Vegas Monte Carlo

There is a three alarm fire at the Monte Carlo hotel in Las Vegas, that is spreading black smoke throughout the Las Vegas Strip.

The Las Vegas Fire Department said the Fire was reported around 11am Vegas Time and burning through the south tower.

Clark County Fire Chief Steve Smith said 13 people suffered from smoke inhalation and all 1,000 Monte Carlo employees were accounted for. He also said that 120 firefighters and 35 fire trucks and other equipment from Clark County, Henderson and Las Vegas Fire Departments were at the blaze, which he called an exterior fire. He said the exterior of the building was made of a very flammable foam facade.

Some room sprinklers were turned on, but no rooms were on fire and there was only minor damage to the inside of the building

The hotels around the Monte Carlo have been evacuated.

The Monte Carlo Guests are staying at nearby MGM/Mirage Properties.

From the news reports and pictures, things don’t look good.

From the news feeds it looks like the outer skin of the Monte Carlo was on fire. Even Chief Steve Smith said, the inner parts of the building were hardly touched or torched (however you want to look at it).

There was also a report of Welders on the roof… which only raises questions.

Hotel officials have issued a statement:
“Thank you for your concern and support at this time. Monte Carlo management is responding to the situation at hand. Thanks to quick action, both our employees and our guests were promptly evacuated. All of our guests will be relocated to a sister property for the duration of their planned stay in Las Vegas. Response from Las Vegas Fire Department has been fast and effective. They are investigating the cause of the fire, but we don’t want to speculate at this moment. We will provide updates as they arise.”

Nick Pappagiorgio and The Vegas Tourist

I recorded the first of many Vegas Podcasts with The Vegas Tourist crew last night. Sazzy, the better half of the Podcast will be on Vacation either sailing the high seas or causing mayhem in you area so I will be taking over while she is away.

I will do my best at being “Sazzy-esq” and not mucking up the works too much, they do a great Podcast and I know I can add to the dynamics.

This upcoming Vegas Podcast all three of us, Sazzy, Mark and myself tear up the “airwaves” with news, information and jokes.

Please give it a listen. Check out the Vegas Podcast at www.thevegastourist.com
